Justyna Garbaczewska Scalpone

Justyna Garbaczewska Scalpone has served as the Tennessee Post-Conviction Defender since March 2013. She heads the Office of the Post-Conviction Defender, an independent state government agency dedicated to providing high-quality legal representation to men and women sentenced to death by Tennessee state courts. In her role, she leads a team of legal and administrative staff who advocate on behalf of clients in post-conviction and clemency proceedings. Justyna is a member of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL) and serves on TACDL’s Death Penalty Committee which provides continuing legal education to capital defense attorneys. Prior to moving to Nashville in 2012, Justyna worked for approximately a decade as an attorney at the Office of the State Appellate Defender in Chicago, where she represented clients in non-capital direct appeals and in capital post-conviction cases. She received her Juris Doctor degree in 2002 and her undergraduate degree in English in 1999, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
