Age-appropriate sport is an important part of the Waldorf curriculum, supporting a healthy balance of both physical and emotional development.

Our athletics program is designed not only to boost fitness, but also to improve students’ psychological, social-emotional, and behavioral health. At LWS, every student participates in a rich array of movement, games, and athletics that advance along with the developing child. In Middle School, our student athletes have the opportunity to learn team-building skills and to develop healthy bodies for life—as well as to learn the importance of discipline, respect, and sportsmanship whatever the outcome.

Athletics in Middle School

The introduction of competitive sports in the 5th grade year leading up to Middle School is an important step in the Waldorf movement curriculum. Having developed physical and social confidence in Elementary School playing cooperative games emphasizing imagination and the joy of movement, 5th grade and Middle School students apply these skills to more traditional competitive sports. Participating in Middle School athletics also gives students a chance to exercise their powers of social grace and sportsmanship as they compete against peers from local schools. Beginning in 5th grade, all LWS students are eligible to compete in our after-school athletics program regardless of ability or skill (no-cut policy). However, student athletes must keep their commitment to attend practices and competitions, as well as maintain good academic standing and attendance. LWS student athletes must be passing and up to date with all coursework in order to participate. LWS currently offers the following sports and clubs:

  • Cross Country, 5th–8th (fall)
  • Archery Club, 5th–8th (fall)
  • Basketball, 6th–8th (winter)
  • Swimming, 6th–8th (winter)
  • Soccer, 5th–8th (spring)
  • Track & Field, 6th–8th (spring)
